Job Summary
The Senior Network Administrator’s role is to manage, monitor, and support
the in-house computer server and network systems to ensure high levels of
availability and security of the deployed business applications. This includes
planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and
optimizing all server, storage, and network hardware, software, and
communication links. This individual also participates in the planning and
implementation of policies and procedures to ensure system provisioning and
maintenance that is consistent with company goals, industry best practices, and
regulatory requirements.
Primary Responsibilities
Strategy & Planning
- Perform server, storage, and network design and capacity planning.
- Develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and associated training plans for server and network resource administration, appropriate use, and disaster recovery.
- Participate in the development of long-term strategic goals for systems and software in conjunction with the IT Director, department managers, and end-user stakeholders.
Acquisition & Deployment
- Assist the user services function as needed in the installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of end user workstation hardware, software, and peripheral devices.
- Deploy software, servers, storage, multi-function printers, network components (routers, switches, firewalls, NAC, IDS), and all host security / encryption systems.
- Coordinate with user services, network engineering, business application, and database administration functions to implement desktop, server, storage, and network systems that utilize industry best practices to meet corporate objectives.
- Conduct research on server, storage, and network products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
- Interact as directed with vendors and contractors to help procure and coordinate the implementation of server, storage, and network products and services.
Operational Management
- Manage server operations and maintenance for all production systems, including file, e-mail, print, backup, and application servers, to ensure the highest levels of availability and performance.
- Manage systems and processes related to corporate IT security solutions, including firewall, anti-virus, network access control, and intrusion detection systems, to ensure proper protection of the internal and perimeter network environments.
- Manage operations and maintenance of all network hardware and equipment, including routers, switches, and IP telephony servers / gateway devices, to minimize downtime and maximize service continuity and performance of the internal and external network and telephone systems.
- Ensure network connectivity of all servers and workstations, including IP telephony service connections, remote client VPN and site-to-site VPN links.
- Perform administration of end user accounts, permissions, access rights, and storage allocations in accordance with best-practices regarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance.
- Ensure the integrity and security of enterprise data on host computers, multiple databases, and during data transfer in accordance to business needs and industry best-practices regarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance.
- Perform system backups and recovery, including routine testing of recovery procedures.
- Perform risk and vulnerability assessments, including server and network security audits.
- Monitor and test server and network performance and provide performance statistics and reports as needed.
- Anticipate, mitigate, identify, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware and software problems on workstations, servers, storage, and network equipment. Work with IT services vendors and escalate incidents as necessary to resolve in an effective and time-critical manner.
- Recommend, schedule, and perform server, storage, and network improvements, upgrades, and repairs.
- Practice network asset management, including maintenance of server and network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications.

Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in the field of computer science or information systems.
- A minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience.
- Certifications in Microsoft server, network, and enterprise application administration, VMWare virtualization, and Cisco networking preferred.
- Deep technical knowledge of desktop, server, and network operating systems, including Windows XP / Vista / 7, Windows Server 2003 / 2008, and VMware ESX 3.5 / 4.0 (vSphere).
- Extensive application support experience with Microsoft Exchange 2003 / 2007, SQL Server 2005 / 2008, IIS 5.0 / 6.0, Symantec Backup Exec, Symantec / Sophos Anti-Virus, and Microsoft WSUS.
- Experience with NetIQ Application / Security Manager, VizionCore vReplicator, and/or Numara FootPrints helpdesk solution (or equivalent) is a big plus.
- Working technical knowledge of current server, storage, and network hardware, software, protocols, and standards, including Microsoft Active Directory / Group Policy, VMware Virtual Center (vCenter), Cisco networking, Cisco IP telephony, Dell / HP servers, EMC / NetApp SAN, and enterprise server and storage virtualization technologies.
- Extensive hands-on server, storage, and network hardware and software troubleshooting experience.
- Experience documenting and maintaining system configuration and process information.
- Demonstrated desire and ability to develop a good understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
