Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company based in Bethesda, MD, focuses on the development and commercialization of medicines based on prostones. The therapeutic potential of prostones, which are bio-lipids that occur naturally in the human body, was first identified by Ryuji Ueno, M.D., Ph.D., Ph.D., Sucampo Pharmaceuticals' chairman and chief executive officer. Dr. Ueno founded Sucampo Pharmaceuticals in 1996 with Sachiko Kuno, Ph.D., founding chief executive officer and advisor, international business development. Sucampo is focused on developing prostones for the treatment of gastrointestinal, respiratory, vascular and central nervous system diseases and disorders.
In April 2008, AMITIZA was approved by the FDA to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation in adult women. There is currently no prescription drug therapy for IBS-C. With this approval, Amitiza becomes the only FDA-approved medical treatment for IBS-C available in the United States. A full product launch for this indication IBS-C is expected by the end of the 2nd quarter, 2008
Sucampo Pharmaceuticals continues to market AMITIZA® (lubiprostone) in the U.S. for chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults and is developing the drug for additional gastrointestinal disorders with large potential markets. The company has filed a Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) using the decentralized procedure for lubiprostone, 24mcg , for CIC in adults in the United Kingdom with supplement application in eight other European countries. Additional development of AMITIZA®; for various gastrointestinal disorders is currently on-going, including a Phase IV study for functional constipation in pediatric patients, a safety study in patients with hepatic impairment and Phase III pivotal trials for opioid-induced bowel dysfunction.
The company continues to take strides in becoming an international, specialty biopharmaceutical company. These include establishing its own commercial sales and marketing capacity in the United States with an aim to expand our operations and address commercial opportunities of AMITIZA® and other products worldwide.
