Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Greenleaf became our Chairman in January 2016 and has been our Chief Executive Officer and a member of our Board of Directors since March 2014. Prior to his leadership of Sucampo, Mr. Greenleaf served as Chief Executive Officer and member of the Board of Directors of Histogenics Corporation, a regenerative medicine company, from June 2013 to February 2014.
From 2006 to 2013, Mr. Greenleaf was employed by MedImmune LLC, the global biologics arm of AstraZeneca, where he most recently served as President. While at MedImmune, Mr. Greenleaf was instrumental in driving the expansion of MedImmune’s pipeline into over 120 clinical and pre-clinical programs and the commercialization of its marketed products. Mr. Greenleaf also served as President of MedImmune Ventures, a wholly owned venture capital fund within the AstraZeneca Group, from January 2010 to June 2013. Prior to serving as President of MedImmune, Mr. Greenleaf was the Chief Commercial Officer of the company, responsible for its commercial, corporate development and strategy functions.
Mr. Greenleaf also held senior commercial roles at Centocor Biotech, Inc. (now Jansen Biotechnology, Johnson & Johnson) from 1998 to 2006 and Boehringer Mannheim G.m.b.H. (now Roche Holdings) from 1996 to 1998.
Mr. Greenleaf is a member of the Board of Directors of Mirna Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing a broad pipeline of microRNA-based oncology therapeutics. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Cerecor, Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing innovative drugs for patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders. Mr. Greenleaf currently chairs the Maryland Venture Fund Authority, whose vision is to oversee implementation of InvestMaryland, a public-private partnership to spur venture capital investment in the state. Mr. Greenleaf is also a member of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), where he serves on the Governing Boards of the Emerging Companies Section and the Health Section. Mr. Greenleaf earned a bachelor’s degree from Western Connecticut State University and a master’s degree in business administration from St. Joseph’s University.
Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is focused on the development and commercialization of specialized medicines that meet major unmet medical needs of patients worldwide. Sucampo has two marketed products – AMITIZA, its lead product, and RESCULA – and a late-stage pipeline of product candidates in clinical development for orphan disease areas. VTS-270 is a mixture of 2-hydroxypropyl-B-cyclodextrins with a specific compositional fingerprint that has been granted orphan designation in the U.S. and Europe and is in a pivotal Phase 2/3 clinical trial for the treatment of Niemann-Pick Disease Type C-1. Sucampo has an option for the North American rights to CPP1- x/sulindac, which is in Phase 3 development for the treatment of familial adenomatous polyposis and has been granted orphan drug designation in the U.S. A global company, Sucampo is headquartered in Rockville, Maryland, and has operations in Japan and Switzerland.
